Recognizing the signs of opioid overdose can save a life. With the ongoing opioid crisis, everyone should know what to look for and how to respond.
The classic signs of opioid overdose include extremely slow or stopped breathing, pinpoint pupils, bluish lips and fingernails, and unresponsiveness or unconsciousness.
Gurgling or choking sounds, limp body, and pale or clammy skin are additional warning signs. If someone is making these sounds or shows these symptoms, act immediately.
If you suspect an opioid overdose, call 911 immediately. If naloxone (Narcan) is available, administer it according to instructions. Stay with the person until help arrives.
Most states have Good Samaritan laws that protect people who call for help during an overdose. Don't let fear of legal consequences prevent you from calling 911.
